Spike aerators allow seed, fertilizer, air and water to reach deep into the lawn’s roots, and plug aerators are perfect for highly compacted, clay soil conditions. Along with de-thatching it allows moisture and nutrients to get down to the root level so the grass plant can utilize them, providing a healthier lawn.
Spike aerators use a series of rotating star-shaped tines that slice into the soil to allow seed, fertilizer, water, air, light and nutrients to reach the grass roots. Best for black dirt and loamy soils.
Plug aerators remove 3/4" diameter soil plugs from the lawn, allowing compacted soil to loosen up in addition to the benefits provided by a spike aerator. Best for easily compacted soil (like clay), heavy-traffic areas (playgrounds and sports fields), and burned out, drought-damaged lawns.
