![]() Here's a date for your diary - 21st October is Apple Day! Initiated by Common Ground (www.commonground.org.uk) in 1990, Apple Day has grown from a handful of events in the first year to over 600 events all over the country. And actually, although the official Apple Day is 21st October, celebrations are spread over many days in different parts of the country. The aim of Common Ground has always been to celebrate local varieties, conserve orchards and create community orchards. What this translates in to on Apple Day is the chance to see hundreds of varieties, taste unusual kinds that you can't find in the shops, buy and take home apples. There are also apple identification servcies, interesting apple trees to buy, apple 'doctors', food and drink made from apples to taste and buy, pruning/grafting demos, games such as apple bobbing, apple & spoon race and the longest peel competition. Go to www.commonground.org.uk/appleday/a-events.html for a full listing of Apple Day events around the country and get out and celebrate the good old Britsh apple! |
