Get your Lawn Ready for Autumn

Garden Articles
Ever wondered how today's best kept lawns, borders and beds are always looking just so good? By reading the articles produced by our expert head groundsman Eddie Seaward, you can make sure your garden becomes an ever-greater source of pride and joy as months and years roll by.

Eddie Seaward, Head Groundsman at the All England Tennis Club, is an undisputed expert in lawn care. Read on for his tips on Autumn lawn care.

As the summer moves through to Autumn there is a feeling of relief as the mowing will soon stop and the lawn can be forgotten again until the Spring. However, if you would like a lawn to be proud of next year this certainly is not the case. Work needs to continue throughout the Autumn and into the Winter.

Normally in September there is a flush of growth, so mowing needs to be increased, just for a few weeks. Mowing is an all year round operation, although not as frequent once the flush has disappeared.

The ideal is to have a height of grass slightly longer, say 25mm, from October onwards and when the grass leaf is a little longer then remove the leaf down to the desired height. By doing so, you will help the grass plant to get light and become stronger. How many lawns do you see in the Spring that are yellow in colour? This is because the lawn has been neglected, left to grow long and then cut short again very quickly. In effect the grass has been put into shock. The method of little and often is kinder on the mower and the operator as well!

Mowing should not take place if the lawn is under water or covered in frost. Other operations are also vital in the Autumn. These are:

Scarification

The grass has a habit of growing lateral and as a result the leaves intertwine so producing a thatch type layer which impedes drainage and will also increase the risk of fungal disease in the plant. If possible use specialist equipment. When scarifying a great deal of debris can be produced, this needs to be cleared away.

Godfreys.com stocks a range of scarifiers, including electric models from Wolf and Qualcast starting at £80. Also stocked are petrol scarifiers from John Deere. At the moment Godfreys is running a special offer on scarifiers - buy any one of the Wolf scarifiers and get a free grass catcher worth £24.99.

Aeration

As in the Spring, your lawn will benefit from aeration. This process punches soil into the ground so allowing air to pass into the soil and therefore encourage bacterial activity and encouraging root development.

Oversowing

Any bare patches can be swon with new seed, a quick germination should be achieved as the soil is warm and hopefully there will be some natural water.

Fertilising

An application of an Autumn feed will help the grass through the Winter; do not use a Summer formula that has high nitrogen content as this can force the growth, producing a weak grass.

As I said, Autumn is not the time to forget the lawn if you want good results in the Summer.
